If you regretfully don’t live on a tropical beach where drinking out of coconuts is a normal Tuesday afternoon activity, Starbucks is here to hook you up with a coconut-y alternative. Starting Tuesday, April 4, the coffee chain will offer Toasted Coconut Cold Brew, which will be available in stores for a limited time.
“Joining Starbucks’ cold brew lineup, Toasted Coconut Cold Brew is serious tropical vacation vibes. It’s lightly sweetened with a new toasted coconut syrup and finished with a float of coconut milk, giving that beautiful marbling visual,” reads a statement from Starbucks. And if we say so ourselves, cold brew coffee is the ideal drink to imbue with coconut flavors, since it’s naturally a bit sweeter than traditional coffee.
Starbucks explained its reasoning for introducing a coconut-flavored drink to its summer lineup. “Why coconut? The Starbucks Team was inspired by a coconut candy from the Dominican Republic—jalao—and wanted to interpret that flavor into a refreshing summer beverage highlighting our Nariño 70 Cold Brew,” a press release reads.
This is not the first coconut-inspired drink Starbucks has ever offered—there’s also been the Starbucks Mocha Coconut Frappuccino, which first debuted in 2002 and recently returned in 2015, and the Starbucks Iced Coconut Milk Mocha Macchiato, which debuted in 2016. Additionally, Starbucks permanently added coconut milk to its menu in 2015, providing yet another alternative for dairy-free customers.
Starbucks has been preparing for the warmer weather with a bunch of spring- and summer-inspired offerings of late. The coffee giant recently collaborated with French fashion house Paul & Joe to offer cherry-blossom-inspired merchandise in its Asia locations in honor of spring; it dropped its first-ever spring cups; and bottled versions of its cold brew drinks are now available in grocery stores.
